GameJam: Colorblade

About the Game

Colorblade is a fast-paced action-platformer developed during a 3-day GameJam. The core mechanic allows players to draw their own path through levels using a color blade, creating unique solutions to each challenge. The game features hand-crafted pixel art and an original soundtrack.

Development Process

Colorblade was developed in just 3 days during a GameJam event at the start of my bachelor's second year. The game's core mechanic is using the titular colorblade to draw paths through the levels, create bridges, platforms, and barriers to navigate a notebook.

As the lead designer and pixel artist, I was responsible for creating some of the visual assets- specifically the player character and animations- designing the game mechanics and the level design. The tight deadline pushed our team to focus on a core gameplay loop that was both fun and innovative.

The biggest challenge our team faced was implementing the drawing mechanic in a way that felt intuitive and responsive, eventually settling for a physics-based system. We wanted players to feel like they had complete control over their path, while still maintaining a level of challenge that made the game engaging.
